New foundation gives $90,000 to support arts criticism in Atlanta

Atlantan Louis Corrigan, founder of the public art presenting nonprofit Flux Projects, has established a foundation that has awarded $90,000 in grants to support art criticism in the metro area.
Possible Futures, Corrigan's new Atlanta-based foundation, announced Tuesday grants of $30,000 each to the online arts magazines ArtsCriticATL.com and BURNAWAY.org and to longtime Atlanta arts writer Jerry Cullum.
“BURNAWAY and ArtsCriticATL have stepped up over the last two years to fill a void in the city’s arts coverage,” Corrigan, an investment analyst, said in a statement. “In their different ways, each is providing a crucial community service.”
Focused on the visual arts, BURNAWAY was founded in 2008 and is led by visual arts critic Jeremy Abernathy and executive director Susannah Darrow.
ArtsCriticATL, which covers the major arts disciplines, was founded in 2009 by Pierre Ruhe and Catherine Fox, former arts critics-reporters for The Atlanta Journal-Constitution who continue as contributing critics and writers for the newspaper.
Cullum is editor-at-large for Atlanta-based Art Papers and is a freelance writer for many print and online arts venues.
“Both ArtsCriticATL and BURNAWAY have put forward valuable new publication models,” Corrigan said. “These grants represent the foundation’s vote that sustainable arts criticism depends on a hybrid business model that must include not just support from advertisers but also broad community support from individuals and foundations committed to the arts, to their communities, and to the critical dialogues a civil society requires to sustain itself.”
Corrigan added that he hoped the foundation's grants will validate the efforts of the two websites and Cullum, and lead to additional funding.
The stated mission of Possible Futures, a private nonprofit, is to nurture Atlanta culture and educate the public through the support and presentation of artists, writers and performers.
