Letter from AICA-USA’s President–March 28, 2011

News from AICA-USA: Letter from the President

March 28, 2011

Dear Members:

The 27th AICA Awards ceremony at the Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art on March 14, 2011, was a success. We celebrated in style the best exhibition of the passing 2009-2010 season in the company of many winners of the Awards and a large group of distinguished guests, among them many prominent artists, curators, and critics. Unfortunately, we became victims of our own success as we ran out of seats several weeks prior to the event. Next year, we are going to find a bigger auditorium than the one we used in March to present our annual Awards.

Our next AICA event is a panel discussion “What a New Generation of Young Art Critics Thinks” scheduled for 1:30-3:30 p.m. on Thursday April 7th. It will take place at the Boston Public Library as part of the 2011 Conference on International Opportunities in the Arts: The Interconnected World in Boston organized by Transcultural Exchange.
The AICA panel is sponsored by The Brooklyn Rail. For more info visit: www.transculturalexchange.orgor our AICA website.

AICA International has announced that the 44th AICA Congress will take place in Asunción (Paraguay) between October 16th and October 20th. The theme of the congress is “Art and Criticism in Times of Crisis.” The themes include: “The Axes of Crisis” (political, social, cultural, artistic, etc.), “Spaces of Interaction and Fields of Tension” (cultural institutions, press & other media, public debates, and alternative forms of interaction) and “Art and Criticism in Virtual Space” (new language, new tools, and new behaviors). AICA members are being invited to participate in four round tables (two in English and two in Spanish) and two symposia (with 10 speakers each). The guidelines will be published on AICA International’s website in next few weeks. The deadline for the submission of proposals will be May 3. The list of accepted proposals will be announced on June 1. The details about the call for papers will be also posted on our website: www.aicausa.org.

The post-Congress trip will be to Curitiba and Porto Alegre (Brazil) between October 21 and October 26. The program includes visits to the Curitiba and Mercosul Biennials, as well as a tour of the Iberé Camargo Foundation. For more details about this year’s Congress visit the website of AICA International: http://www.aica-int.org/spip.php?rubrique7and click on “Upcoming Congresses.”

AICA-USA’s website is now our main platform for communicating with AICA members. We encourage you to visit it. Our web master Jason posts news, including news from the members, on a regular basis. Please inform him about your new exhibitions, publications, and other events that you would want AICA members to know about. His e-mail address: webmaster@aicausa.org

The 2011 membership renewals are in process. Most of you have already renewed. If you have not done it, please renew as soon as possible. (Our web master will e-mail a reminder in next few days.) Instructions how to renew are also posted on our website. AICA International has become very strict in processing our membership fees: members who do not renew for two consecutive years are being dropped from their list and, if they will want to remain AICA members, they will have to reapply. Any questions, write to Dan at aicausaprogram@gmail.com

The Board and I look forward to interacting with you in person at our Annual meeting, which will be scheduled for mid-May. I will report on our activities of the passing year and share with you plans for the year to come. We are also planning to have a panel devoted to vital issues concerning AICA members, about which we will inform you in a separate e-mail.

Thank you for being an AICA member.

Kind regards,

Marek Bartelik

President of AICA-USA
